Pop Culture Pop - Up Boutique
Welcome to another year at NY Comic Con and the 2nd year of being a part of this huge cultural event. NY Comic Con is hosted every year at the largest venue in New York, the Jacob Javitz Convention Center. It ran from Oct. 9th - 12th with 4 days of huge crowds and lots of enthusiasm.
For our 2nd year we improved on a few things from last years success and put together the “ Pop Culture Pop - Up Boutique” showcasing edible wearable art! With the help of Mayen Orido from Way Beyond Cakes by Mayen, 30 artists put together amazingly creative mugs, backpacks, purses, wallets and jewelry! Mayen graciously shared her tutorials with the group to help our artists in terms of structure. And like last year we had both cake artists and cookiers be a part of this collaboration!
The goal this year was to have the event goers actually try on, wear and pick up the pieces! We also made it easier with requesting smaller pieces for people to be able to ship their pieces to NY to be included in the LIVE display. People were continuously amazed that they were all cookies and cake!! We also put together a Instagram page and had the event goers pose for pictures with our pieces. They all loved modeling for us and were excited to see their pictures posted on the Instagram page! From Susie Jacobs amazing sugar pearl decorated cookie purse, Jamie Louks edible jewelry and display bust, to the creatively ingenious Stan Lee Stanley cup by Juliet Galea, passerby were intrigued and amazed!!
Ive wanted for awhile to build up some networking and collaborate with many of the big name companies that showcase there. This year I was commissioned by Bandai Namco a huge anime/manga/video game company to create a cake for the launch of their new video game! We’ve also established contacts with a few companies that were working out to collaborate with in the future. And I look at this as a way for sugar artists to showcase their work in a new setting and for their work to reach a new audience! And I couldn’t do it without the help from my fellow cake friends, Jesse Lesser, Juliet Galea and Yaya Graham!
Next year will be the 20th anniversary show with already lots of plans in place both by Comic Con and ourselves! So stay tuned for next October for even more Interactive sugar goodness!!
