Jack Kirby - A Tribute in Sugar Art
When you take an art school graduate ( majoring in cartooning) and a renowned cake artist with a love for all things comic books/art well then an amazing idea is born!
Being a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in NYC and being fortunate enough to have some of the comic book greats as my teachers ( Eisner, Kurtzman, Orlando, etc) I had always wanted to be a part of NY Comic Con! To see so many of my friends and fellow alumni show case their achievements has always been a dream of mine. But my cartooning career took many different paths until I eventually found a new medium; cakes! Over the years I honed my craft, from magazines, cake competitions, TV and even the World “Cake Olympics”
But I still always wanted to have my art be a part of the NY Comic Con phenomenon. So after 2 years of throwing around ideas, planning and emailing, the Jack Kirby - A Tribute in Sugar Art was born! I chose cake friends/amazing cake artists and fellow comic book fans to help celebrate “The King” of comics, Jack Kirby, recreating some of his amazing creations in cake, cookie and sugar form!
NY Comic Con at the Jacob Javitz Center is the largest venue space in NYC. It ran from Oct 17 - 20th 2024 with 4 days of huge crowds and lots of enthusiasm! I had a few fellow cake artists and friends to help me man our booth; Jesse Lesser (Jesse Lesser cakes ) Lisa Pak ( Lisa Paks cakes) Victoria Ryan ( Cake Designs by Victoria ) Mimi Hood ( Mimis Mocha Treats) and Lisa Santangelo Margulis. The response to our installation was amazing! People could not believe they were cakes and cookies! At times it was standing room only in our booth because it got so crowded with people waiting to walk in and get an up close view of things!
The representatives from Reed Pop ( who runs the Con) stopped by and absolutely loved it!! The board members from the Kirby Research Museum stopped by as well and were so overwhelmed with what we did. And the Jack Kirby piece was donated to the museum at the end of the show. The general consensus was that they were so happy that there was something new and different and unique at the show. Lots of interviews also took place over the weekend. I was so very happy to be able to pull this off and to prove that this idea/concept could and was a success. Hoping to come back with another theme next year!
